Pastor's Corner

“I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom: preach the word, be ready in season and out of season, reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction.”
I Timothy 4:1-2
Dear Church Family,
For the last 28 years I have had the privilege of preaching the Word of God to God’s people through sermons. In my files I have 1,338 sermon outlines! As I rarely “repeat” a sermon, that means I have prayed over, labored (as a friend says “it takes as much perspiration as it does inspiration to preach!”), and written and preached a whole lot of messages! Again I repeat, what a privilege! To be able to “fulfill”, if you will, the Scriptural admonition given above is a high calling for anyone and indeed a responsibility I take very seriously!
In fact, some years ago I came up with some “summary questions” for myself as to what I hope to achieve with each sermon God allows me to deliver. These are the “Goals in Preaching” that I have:
- Is it clear?
- No one should leave confused as to the main point
- Is it concise?
- Did I speak well with the points flowing together?
- Is it “correct”?
- True to the text from thorough research and seeking the illumination of the Holy Spirit with much prayer
- Is it connected?
- Relevant and relational to the reality people live in
- Is it challenging?
- Have I made good application so that people know what their response should be to God’s truth?
Each week as I stand before you I pray that these goals are reached. Each week as I stand before you I pray that I will be able to fulfill what Peter says in II Peter 1:13, “and I consider right, as long as I am in this earthly dwelling, to stir you up by way of reminder”. Reminders to hear the Word, be challenged and changed by the Word and to obey the Word!
So, I will “preach the Word, in season and out”, to reprove, rebuke and exhort (including myself!) and to do so carefully and prayerfully with “great patience and instruction”! The joy of doing so and the privilege you give me to do so, motivate me each and every Sunday! Thanks for listening! Sola Deo Gloria!
Serving with you,
