The youth ministry at Ustick Baptist Church (Blaze) aims to be:

A corner for teenagers - UBC wants to be a place where students can identify as "their place, their hang out, their home away from home."  It's important for everyone to have a place to find refuge from the world and encouragement from the Word of God.

A community for teenagers - Let's be honest, people of all ages need like-minded friends to hang out with and help us along the way in our walk with God, especially teenagers.  Blaze seeks to provide teenagers with just such a community.

A church for teenagers - Ustick Baptist is a church for teenagers.  We put emphasis on worshiping the Lord, serving our brothers and sisters, reaching out to the lost, growing in discipleship, and practicing true fellowship.

Our philosophy of ministry resembles the Apostle Paul's in 1 Thessalonians 2:8, "Because we loved you so much, we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well."  The youth ministry at Ustick Baptist Church wants to do the same thing.  We don't want to be a group that simply meets together and then forgets about each other or God the moment we leave.  Instead, we're striving to be a family that loves God and serves together.

John joined the staff at Ustick Baptist in September of 2015. He was born and raised in Stockton, California. Prior to moving to Boise, he served as youth and children’s pastor at a Baptist church in Lodi, CA for 7 years. He’s also volunteered with at-risk teenagers and students with special needs. He is a student at Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary studying divinity.

John became a Christian while he was a teenager. Christian music peaked John’s interest in Christianity, which led to his decision to read the New Testament. Upon reading the Gospel, John realized that God was restoring that which was broken and reconciling people to Himself through Jesus Christ. The Lord led John to youth ministry and he has never looked back.

John’s passions include sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ with students, spending time reading and talking about the Bible with students, eating pizza, watching Jeopardy!, eating tacos, hiking, eating Hot Pockets, and hanging out with his darling Julie.

John believes that the Lord knows better than anyone the ability and impact students can have on the world. God used Samuel, David, Mary, the Apostle John and many other Biblical heroes while they were in their youth. The Lord still uses teenagers to accomplish great things and John wants to help shepherd students to spiritual success.

Dating, Waiting & Mating

Posted by Bryon Putman on Wednesday, March 1, 2017 @ 3:06 PM

What fun we had in February! We had a great series with “Dating, Waiting & Mating”, as we discussed the caution that goes with dating, the necessity and command of waiting to mate until it is acceptable to do so (within marriage). Students had good discussions with each other and with leaders, very meaningful!

We also had a very exciting and impactful time at Cathedral Pines for our all youth winter camp. There was a lot of snow, activities, learning, worship, and even improvising, as the camp ran out of propane and heat! We discussed in depth 1John 1:8-10 and what it means to be a “Real Human Being”, someone who confesses sins and understands that everyone we come into contact with will be a sinner as we are. How do we show love to them and not be full of heartache ourselves? With empathy, compassion and forgiveness!
