Celebration Of Advent, 2009

November 21, 2009

“Good News in a Bad News World”
(Isaiah 61:1-3; Luke 4:14-21)

Advent is the season in the weeks before Christmas Day when God’s people meditate on the GOOD NEWS of our salvation through His Son. It is a time to quiet our hearts, clear our minds from distraction and “fix our eyes on Jesus, the Author and Perfecter of Faith.”

As a family or as individuals, please set aside a specific time each day, from November 20 through December 25, to draw near to the Lord as you remember the GOOD NEWS of Jesus Christ.

Each day includes a Scripture, hymn and prayer that focus on one aspect of the GOOD NEWS. At the beginning of each devotional time, light the candle or candles. At the end, after you’ve finished praying, you may blow out the candle(s).

A note about the songs: These songs from The Celebration Hymnal contain profound lyrics and beautiful melodies! A few of them may be unfamiliar to you, but they’re well worth becoming acquainted with. For songs that are new to you, there are a few options: (1) Recite the words out loud; (2) find the songs on youtube.com (most of them may be found with a simple title search, and some of them even have lyrics displayed as the song is sung); or (3) if you can read music, spend a couple of minutes ahead of time getting to know the melody.

Through this season of worship may we be filled with gratitude for the GOOD NEWS of grace, help, hope and joy through our Savior, Jesus!
